What Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC (1980-90) Is About
A documentary about the punk scene in Washington DC in the eighties. Bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream, Void, Rites of Spring and Fugazi pressed their own records and booked their own shows, needing neither the permission of the major labels nor the attention of the mainstream press. Scott Crawford tells the decade through the people who went through it: Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, Dave Grohl, Thurston Moore and J. Mascis all speak. What comes across is less nostalgia than a method, the working detail of a period in which doing it yourself was not a preference but the only option. It is a record of what happened before the alternative boom of the nineties.
