What Secret Lives of Orangutans Is About
The documentary was filmed over two years in the swamp forest of Suaq in northern Sumatra, the site of a thirty year research project where more than two hundred orangutans are individually known. The camera follows a mother and her daughter, and the spine of the film is what the young one has to learn before she starts moving through the forest alone. Tool use among the Suaq orangutans was already documented; the most striking record here is Rakus, filmed treating an open wound on his face with chewed leaves from a plant known for anti inflammatory and pain relieving properties. David Attenborough narrates. Drone work let the crew capture behaviour that had not been filmed before.
