Security Unlimited

We follow three men working for a private security firm: Michael, the rule-bound and money-minded manager, the indifferent Sam and the hopeless Ricky. While transporting cash to a bank a robbery happens right under their noses and the company's reputation is gone. The three go after the robbers to make good the loss, which turns into a run of chases from a shopping centre to a building site. It is one of the films the Hui brothers made together and stands at the turn from seventies to eighties Hong Kong comedy. Michael Hui directs and acts; the humour comes from the body and from timing rather than from lines, which is why it works without the language. Behind it there is a question of class: all three men are on low wages and the money they guard is never theirs. Sam Hui's songs are also among the best-known Cantopop of the period.
