Shaitan

Bejoy Nambiar's 2011 Indian film follows a group of friends from wealthy families. All five take drugs, spend their nights at parties and are used to living without consequences. One night an accident they cause kills two people; trying to cover it up they attempt to bribe the police, and to raise the money they stage the kidnapping of one of their own. The plan comes apart fast. The film describes moral collapse through the night life of Mumbai and is formally ambitious, with its use of music, the speed of the cutting and its colour choices forming its identity. Anurag Kashyap is among the producers and the film carries his influence. None of the characters is sympathetic and that is deliberate. Who it's for: viewers who like Indian independent crime films and formal experiment. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding drug use and violence.
