What Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure Is About
Matthew Bate's 2011 documentary begins in San Francisco in 1987, when two young men record their neighbours' nightly fights. The recordings circulate among friends, tape copies spread across the country, and the shouting of two older men becomes cult material. The documentary's real subject is the ethics of that spread. The people recorded neither consented nor knew; comics, theatre and film projects were drawn from the tapes without anyone asking them. Bate puts that question directly to the men who made the recordings. The film can also be read as an early case of how something went viral before the internet. The tone begins comic and grows steadily uncomfortable. Who it's for: those who like documentaries about culture and ethics. Who it's not for: viewers troubled by recordings full of constant swearing and homophobic language; that is the film's primary material.
