What Skin, Skin Is About
Four young people from Helsinki set up camp by a lake. The film is about summer, about being young, about how hard it is to love somebody, but what it is really describing is a generation in the mid sixties trying to write its own rules. Mikko Niskanen shot it in four weeks and improvised much of the dialogue with the actors. It did very well in Finland both at the box office and with critics, taking six of the national film awards. Showing sexuality with an openness unusual for the time turned it into a marker for a whole generation.
