So Ends Our Night

A man forced to flee because he is against the Nazis takes to the roads of Europe. On the same roads a young Jewish couple is also running. All three live between borders, without papers, never able to stop moving. As Hitler’s reach grows, the places left to flee to grow fewer. The film shows the state of the refugee not as adventure but as a standing threat. It was made in 1941, while the war was going on, and openly takes a side. That papers decide a person’s life is the real subject. Fredric March and Margaret Sullavan take the leads, with Glenn Ford also in the cast. John Cromwell’s hundred and seventeen minute American film was completed in 1941.
