What Soul Boys of the Western World Is About
George Hencken's documentary tells the story of Spandau Ballet. The band came out of a small London club scene that stood outside the mainstream in both dress and music, and within a few years was known worldwide. The film is assembled entirely from archive: concerts of the period, television appearances, home video, news bulletins. There is no narrator and no interview shot today, and even the members' voices come from recordings of the time. What follows the rise is not skipped either, and the dispute over money and rights and the breaking up of the band are told with the same directness. It doubles as a social document of Britain in the 1980s that can be read quite apart from the music.
