What Story of G.I. Joe Is About
The war correspondent Ernie Pyle joins C Company of the 18th Infantry and walks with them from Tunisia into Italy. He has no interest in generals or strategy; he writes the ordinary soldier's mud, exhaustion, letters and death. The company is led by Captain Bill Walker, who knows his men and says a little less each time he loses one. The film stages no moment of victory. It simply shows the same faces being subtracted one by one. William A. Wellman directs, with Burgess Meredith as Pyle and Robert Mitchum as Walker, the part that brought Mitchum the only Oscar nomination of his career. A hundred and eight minutes. Much of the dialogue is lifted straight from Pyle's columns. Pyle was killed on Ie Shima before the film was released.
