What Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror Is About
Linus O'Brien's 2025 documentary tells how a musical written at the end of the sixties became a cult. Richard O'Brien wrote it during a period without work; it began on a small stage, and the film version did not succeed on first release. The argument is that the audience took the film over. At late-night screenings people began wearing costumes, saying the lines and answering the screen; the narrative shows how that form of participation became established. Richard O'Brien, Susan Sarandon, Tim Curry and Barry Bostwick speak. The documentary's director is O'Brien's son, and that closeness sets its tone. Sections on gender identity form the film's second line. Who it's for: those who like cult film history and musicals. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical examination; the documentary is largely celebratory.
