What Summer Vacation 1999 Is About
With no families to go back to for the summer holiday, three students are left alone at their boarding school. Months earlier one of their schoolmates took his own life, and that shadow is still over them. Then someone arrives at the school who looks exactly like the boy who died, and the relationships, the jealousies and the unsaid things among them come out one by one. All four of the young male parts are played by young women, and that choice gives the account a distance of its own from beginning to end. It was adapted from a comic. Shusuke Kaneko’s ninety minute Japanese film was completed in 1988.
