What Death Note: The Last Name Is About
The reckoning between the student using the notebook and the detective watching him enters a new phase when a second notebook appears. A television presenter is now involved as well. The film completes the story the first part left hanging and builds an ending markedly different from the manga's. The narrative again runs on each side calculating ahead of the other; there is almost no action. Shusuke Kaneko directed. Tatsuya Fujiwara and Kenichi Matsuyama continue in their roles. It opened in the same year, directly after the first film. Who it's for: those who have seen the first film. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the manga's ending; this one writes its own.
