Sun, Hay, Strawberries

Šimon Plánička is studying agriculture and comes to a small village called Hoštice in South Bohemia for his placement. He wants to run an experiment at the collective farm: the relation between the milk yield of cows and the order of the barn. The farm's management is not interested at first; then they hear his surname, take him for the son of the district agricultural commissioner, and the doors open. Nobody corrects the mistake. There is also Blažena, a girl from the village, given the job of finding out what Šimon is doing, and things tangle at that point because her boyfriend Venca is jealous. Zdeněk Troška's film was very popular in Czechoslovakia in the eighties and two sequels followed. The comedy comes out of the collective farm system itself: nobody tells anybody the truth and everyone watches what the person above them will say. The mould is simple but the village life is real.
