What Princess Jasnenka and the Flying Shoemaker Is About
To make a wicked witch’s prophecy come to nothing, the king shuts his daughter Jasněnka in the castle tower and lets no one near her. Jíra, a young shoemaker’s apprentice, makes himself wings out of fine leather and flies up to the tower; not only does he get the princess out, he also manages to free her from the power of the witch and her daughter Černava. The tale is about an ordinary apprentice with wit and courage winning out against the world of the court, and it is generous with its fantastical scenes. Zdeněk Troška’s eighty seven minute Czechoslovak film was made from a fairy tale by Jan Drda, with a screenplay by Karel Steigerwald. Michaela Kuklová plays Jasněnka and Jan Potměšil plays Jíra, with music by Petr Mandel. It was completed in 1987.
