What Tea in the Harem Is About
Two young men in a housing project in the Paris suburbs: Madjid, the eldest son of an immigrant family, and his closest friend Pat. A crowded household is kept going entirely by his mother. The two of them move between unemployment, boredom and petty crime. Mehdi Charef adapted his own novel and wrote much of it out of his own life, with the gulf between parents who emigrated from Algeria and children who grew up in France at the centre. It won the Jean Vigo Prize and the Cesar for best first film in 1985, and is taken as the start of beur cinema.
