What Test Pilot Is About
Jim is a test pilot who takes aircraft to their limits, gambling with death on every flight. His wife Ann and his closest friend and mechanic Gunner try to keep him upright and sober. The real relationship in the film is not the marriage but the one between the pilot and his mechanic, and Spencer Tracy's quiet loyalty rather overshadows Clark Gable's display. The flying was shot with real aircraft and is impressive for the thirties. It was nominated for best picture. The following year Victor Fleming would direct both Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz.
