What A Guy Named Joe Is About
Pete Sandidge is an American bomber pilot stationed in England during the war, and he has no time for rules. His girl Dorinda flies too. Pete is killed on a mission, and on the other side a general sends him back with an assignment: he is to guide a young pilot who can neither see nor hear him. The job gets considerably harder when that young pilot falls for Dorinda. Victor Fleming directed it from a screenplay by Dalton Trumbo, with Spencer Tracy and Irene Dunne in the leads. Steven Spielberg has said he saw the film as a child and that it had a part in his wanting to direct; in 1989 he remade it himself as Always.
