The Farmer Takes a Wife

The film is set in upstate New York in the nineteenth century. Molly Larkins works as a cook on the canal boats. The boat she works on belongs to Jotham Klore. Life on the canal is loud and full of movement. Molly loves that life. Dan Harrow starts working on the canal too. He has something else in mind, though. He wants to save enough money to buy a farm. Molly is outraged when she hears it. To her there is nothing better than the canal. Dan, for his part, wants to marry her. She will not give up the water to become a farmer’s wife. The struggle between them carries the film. The production came from a novel and then from a stage play. Henry Fonda stepped onto the screen with this film. Janet Gaynor and Henry Fonda appear in the ninety one minute film, an American production Victor Fleming finished in 1935.
