What Treasure Island Is About
The first major sound adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, made at MGM with Wallace Beery as Long John Silver and Jackie Cooper as Jim Hawkins. A dying sailor's sea chest gives up a map, a ship is fitted out, and the cook who signs on turns out to have private arrangements with half the crew. The adventure is the frame; what the film is really about is the unreliable affection between the boy and the pirate, which is why it holds up at all. Victor Fleming directed it five years before The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind.
