What That Damned Meat Is About
Andre Klotzel's 1985 Brazilian film follows a peasant who wants one thing his whole life: to eat meat. He meets a woman eager to marry who promises that her father will kill an ox at their wedding, but first he must pass a series of tests. The humour comes from that simple wish meeting endless obstacles. The narrative follows the structure of a folk tale and makes no attempt at realism; poverty here is not dramatic material but the ground of an absurd comedy. The dialogue was written in the rural speech of the Brazilian interior and that builds the film's texture. Fernanda Torres is in the cast. The cinematography uses the rural landscape in a stylised way. Who it's for: those who like Brazilian comedy and rural narratives. Who it's not for: viewers unfamiliar with the local speech; part of the humour rests on language and is lost in translation.
