What That Night of Varennes Is About
On 20 June 1791 Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette tried to slip out of Paris and were caught at Varennes. Ettore Scola invents a coach travelling the same road that night and fills it with people from history who never actually met: the writer Restif de la Bretonne, an ageing Casanova, the American revolutionary Thomas Paine, and Sophie de la Borde, one of the queen's ladies-in-waiting. The king is never seen; the film follows not him but what the people left behind him make of it. Mastroianni is Casanova, Harvey Keitel is Paine.
