What The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu Is About
This three-hour documentary tells Ceausescu's twenty-five years in power entirely through official footage. The material comes from more than a thousand hours held in the Romanian National Archives: congresses, factory visits, state trips, welcomes, applause. It opens with the speech he gave at his predecessor's funeral in 1965 and ends shortly before his execution in 1989. There is no voiceover in Andrei Ujica's film, no expert commentary, no explanatory caption. The viewer is looking at how the regime wished to see itself, and once that propaganda material runs uninterrupted it gives itself away. The film neither defends Ceausescu nor prosecutes him, and yet the portrait that comes out at the end leaves nobody comfortable. It is the last part of Ujica's trilogy on the fall of Romanian communism.
