What The Baker's Wife Is About
Known in French as La Femme du boulanger, The Baker's Wife is Marcel Pagnol's village comedy about a new baker, Aimable, whose young wife runs off with a shepherd, leaving the bread starved villagers scrambling to reunite the couple. It's not based on a real event but on an episode from Jean Giono's 1932 novel "Jean le Bleu" (published in English as "Blue Boy"). Raimu's lead performance is considered one of the great comic turns in film history, and Orson Welles reportedly watched it repeatedly, declaring Raimu the greatest actor in the world and saying he wanted to meet him. Who it's for: fans of classic French village comedy and of Raimu's legendary performance. Who it's not for: anyone expecting fast cut, modern comic rhythms, since the film carries the leisurely pacing typical of 1938.
