The Well-Digger's Daughter

Provence. Pascal Amoretti is a well-digger, widowed, living with his six daughters. He adores the eldest, Patricia, and is proud of her. Félipe, who works for him, wants to marry her, but Patricia has fallen for Jacques, the son of a well-off shopkeeper. War comes, Jacques goes to the front as a pilot, and Patricia is pregnant. Jacques's family will not acknowledge the child, and Pascal, defending his honour, throws his daughter out. Then word arrives that Jacques has been killed, and both families want to see their grandchild at once. Marcel Pagnol directs, with Raimu as Pascal, Fernandel as Félipe and Josette Day as Patricia. Two hours and twenty-two minutes. It was made in the year France was occupied and contained a radio speech by Marshal Pétain; after the Liberation that scene was swapped for a speech by de Gaulle.
