What The Basque Ball: Skin Against Stone Is About
Julio Medem tries to build a bridge between political positions that live side by side in the Basque Country, often violently. The documentary talks to seventy people: the history of ETA and of the GAL, prisoners, people under threat, relatives of the dead, the language question, and a line running from the nineteenth century Carlist wars through the bombing of Guernica in 1937 to the Ibarretxe Plan. Medem's method is to take no side, and that is exactly what he was attacked for, on the grounds that it seats victims and perpetrators at one table. It caused a storm at San Sebastian in 2003.
