The Battle of Neretva

January 1943. Fearing an Allied landing in the Balkans, the German army launches a major offensive against the Yugoslav Partisans in western Bosnia. For the Partisans and the thousands of refugees with them, many of them wounded or sick with typhus, the only way out is the bridge over the river Neretva, and the decision taken about that bridge is what the film is built around. Veljko Bulajić's film was the most expensive production ever made in Yugoslavia and was nominated for the foreign language film Oscar. Yul Brynner, Franco Nero, Orson Welles, Hardy Krüger and Curd Jürgens are in the cast. Pablo Picasso made the poster and asked for no fee, taking a case of Yugoslav wine instead.
