What The Book Of Vision Is About
Eva has left medicine and works on the history of medicine. In her hands is the notebook of a physician who lived in the eighteenth century: Dr Anmuth wrote down the story of each of his thousands of patients. A decision about her own body is also coming towards her. As she reads, the two times run into each other and the people of the past start coming to her. Carlo Hintermann's film moves between eighteenth century Prussia and the present. Its subject is the moment when medicine stopped listening to the patient and started measuring. Terrence Malick is among the producers, and the film's images and rhythm sit close to that line: little incident, much looking. Lotte Verbeek plays Eva and Charles Dance the physician.
