What The Boy Soldier Is About
The 1930s. A father who fought as a sergeant major at Verdun enrols his thirteen year old son Simon Chalumot in the military school for soldiers’ children at Les Andelys. The boy is gentle and interested in films, and at home none of that counts for anything. What follows is the record of a child who will not be disciplined, told with the political hardness Yves Boisset brought to institutions generally. It was adapted from the 1952 novel by Yves Gibeau. The film did no commercial business, yet Boisset considered it the best thing he made, and it drew more letters from viewers than any of his others. Lucas Belvaux plays Simon and Jean Carmet the father.
