What The Cat's-Paw Is About
Ezekial Cobb is a naive young man raised in China by his missionary father, and he comes back to America to find a wife. Corrupt politicians put him up for mayor as a dummy candidate with no chance of winning. The plan backfires: Cobb wins and sets about cleaning up the city. Sam Taylor directed, from Clarence Budington Kelland’s novel serialised in the Saturday Evening Post in 1933, the rights to which Harold Lloyd bought before the book was even finished. It was the fourth of Lloyd’s seven starring roles in sound and his last collaboration with Taylor. China here is used as a comic device, and the hero’s innocence is built out of it.
