What The Conductor Is About
A well known conductor travels to Jerusalem with his orchestra to perform the St Matthew Passion. The day before the journey he receives a telegram: his son, who lived in Israel, has taken his own life. The man had refused his son for years, convinced that his own way of living was the right one. What his son left behind in writing forces him to think again about every position he has held. The film presses the concert and the mourning into the same three days; the music here is not consolation but the ground of a reckoning. Vladas Bagdonas plays the lead in Pavel Lungin’s eighty six minute Russian film, completed in 2012.
