The Gorbachev years. Platon Makovsky and four university friends go straight through the door that private enterprise has just opened. Small deals first, then imports, then banks, car plants and television. Twenty years on, Platon is the richest man in Russia. But most of the friends who started out with him were either left behind or used up. The fall comes as hard as the rise: investigations, attempts on his life, and a reckoning with the state. Pavel Lungin directs, adapting Yuli Dubov's novel; Dubov also worked on the screenplay. Vladimir Mashkov plays Platon. Whether the character is Boris Berezovsky was much discussed; both the author and the director denied it, and the resemblance is there all the same.
