What The Island Is About
On a freezing island in northern Russia, Father Anatoly shovels coal at a small monastery, behaves like nobody else there and drives the other monks to distraction. Visitors from the mainland see him differently: they say he heals the sick and knows what is coming. None of that is what troubles him. Something he did during the war to save his own life is still eating him, and he does not know whether penance works. Lungin is not making a devotional film. He is telling a story about conscience.
