What The Crazy Life Is About
The documentary is about two rival gangs in El Salvador, Mara 18 and Mara Salvatrucha, both born in Los Angeles and later carried to the country. Christian Poveda took his camera inside Mara 18 and lived with them for eighteen months. What he filmed is not action: funerals, hospital corridors, prison visits, tattoo removal sessions, young people trying to hold down work at a bakery. Most of them die before they are twenty. Shortly after the film was released, on 2 September 2009, Poveda was shot dead while driving back from filming in the neighbourhood. In 2011 ten gang members and a former policeman were convicted of the killing.
