The Day Will Come

The Day Will Come, directed by Jesper W. Nielsen and written by Søren Sveistrup, creator of The Killing, is a Danish drama about two brothers trying to survive under a tyrannical headmaster at a fictionalized 1960s boarding school called "Gudbjerg." The film is based on the real Godhavn Boys' Home scandal: a 2005 Danish television documentary, Drengehjemmet, first exposed allegations that children at Godhavn suffered systemic violence and sexual abuse between 1945/1946 and 1976; a psychiatrist at the home conducted medical experiments on the children, including administering LSD to try to stop bedwetting. The Danish government issued an official apology to the "Godhavn boys" in 2019. The film won six awards at the 2017 Robert Awards, the Danish Film Academy's awards, including Best Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Sofie Gråbøl), and Best Supporting Actor; Lars Mikkelsen separately won a Bodil Award for the same performance. Who it's for: anyone curious about a drama based on a real children's home scandal, later the subject of an official government apology. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a light, fictional boarding school story, since this is directly grounded in a real abuse scandal.
