What The Deadly Duo Is About
This wuxia film Chang Cheh made for Shaw Brothers is set in the twelfth century, during the Song period when Jin armies had invaded the north. The resistance fighter played by Ti Lung devises a plan to rescue a captured prince and recruits a mysterious fighter with almost superhuman skill, played by David Chiang. In front of the fortress there is a bridge nobody can cross, and the entire tension of the film hangs on it. Chang Cheh foregrounds the sacrifice of individual men rather than mass combat, since in his cinema heroism always has a price. It is counted among the harder pictures Chiang and Ti Lung made together.
