What The Desert Rats Is About
North Africa, 1941. Rommel's army is about to take the port of Tobruk, and the unit holding the town is largely Australian. A British captain devoted to discipline is put in charge of them and the two sides clash from the first day. The desert rats of the title is a real name: German propaganda called the Australians under siege rats, and they took the name up with pride. Robert Wise's film is a companion to The Desert Fox from two years earlier, with James Mason as Rommel again. Being an American production, it centres a British officer in a siege the Australians held.
