What The Devil's Violinist Is About

At the start of the nineteenth century Niccolò Paganini shakes Europe as a virtuoso who plays the violin in a way nobody else can, and the rumours around him attribute the gift to a bargain with the devil. The film foregrounds the manager who carried him to fame and the young singer he falls for during a London tour. Bernard Rose tells the story of a showman without dismantling the legend, and puts the weight on the music. Paganini is played by David Garrett, himself a violin virtuoso, and the fact that the playing is genuinely his is the production’s strongest card.
