What The Element of Crime Is About
A detective trying to solve an unresolved murder attempts to imitate the killer's way of thinking, and the imitation carries him away from himself. This was Lars von Trier's first feature, shot throughout in a single yellow monochrome, with water, mud and darkness in every frame. The narrative arrives from inside a hypnosis session, so the reality of what is described is suspect from the start. The plot is hard to follow and the film does not care, since the subject is atmosphere.
