What The English Surgeon Is About
The documentary follows Henry Marsh, an English brain surgeon who has gone to Ukraine to operate there for years. With his Ukrainian colleague Igor Kurilets, Marsh sees hopeless cases with worn out instruments and limited means, and sometimes has to tell the patient himself that he can help and sometimes that he cannot. At the centre of the film is a patient named Marian; a tumour in his brain is causing seizures, and because surgery carries a risk of paralysis Marsh proposes to operate while he is awake. Geoffrey Smith’s ninety three minute documentary was shown at the London Film Festival on 1 October 2007, with music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. It was named best documentary at Hot Docs and at Silverdocs.
