What The Extraordinary Voyage Is About
Georges Méliès made A Trip to the Moon in 1902, a film by a magician, hand-coloured frame by frame. Then he went bankrupt, most of his films were destroyed, and he ended up selling toys at a railway station. The colour version was considered lost until a print turned up in Barcelona in 1993, so badly decayed that for years it was judged beyond restoration. Serge Bromberg and Eric Lange's documentary tells both Méliès's life and the rescue of that print. The restored film screened at Cannes in 2011 with a new score by the French band Air. Costa-Gavras, Jeunet, Gondry and Hazanavicius all speak.
