What The Fencing Master Is About
Pedro Olea’s 1992 film adapts Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s second novel and is set in Madrid in 1868, in the weeks before the revolution. An ageing fencing master who has never taught a woman agrees to train one who wants a particular thrust he is known for and will not say why. Once the noblemen and the political conspiracies circling her come into the room, the lessons turn into a murder plot the old man is temperamentally unequipped to read. It was shot in Aranjuez, Toledo and Segovia and picked up eleven Goya nominations the following year. Omero Antonutti and Assumpta Serna carry it, and the fencing is treated throughout as a code of conduct rather than as action.
