What The Golden Fern Is About
A woodcutter walking in the forest finds something. What he finds is a golden fern. The seed of the fern turns into a beautiful woman. The two of them fall in love. Then there is a feast in the village. The woodcutter drinks there and signs himself into the army. The time to part arrives. The woman gives him a shirt. She makes him swear never to take it off. At the front things get tangled. He sees the colonel’s daughter and is taken with her. To win her attention he has to perform a series of feats. The promise he gave is still standing. The film draws on a folk tale. Vít Olmer and Dana Smutná appear in the hundred and fifteen minute film, a Czechoslovak production Jiří Weiss finished in 1963.
