What Romeo, Juliet and Darkness Is About
Prague, 1942. Pavel, a student, is hiding a Jewish girl in the attic of his apartment building. Outside, the wave of reprisals that followed the assassination of Heydrich is still running; inside, love grows between the two of them and he is her only link to the world. Then Pavel’s mother finds out, and everyone living in the building has to decide whether the girl can stay. Jiri Weiss adapted Jan Otcenasek’s novel into a film about fear rather than heroism: exactly where solidarity ends when the penalty is death.
