What The Green, Green Grass of Home Is About
Hou Hsiao-hsien's 1982 Taiwanese film is among his early works. A teacher posted from Taipei to a village school meets a mischievous class and a way of life he is not used to; before long he becomes attached both to the countryside and to a colleague at the school. The film does not carry the weight of his later work; it was made as a popular production and includes songs. Even so something distinctive is already there: the camera observes the children and leaves the story to their games. Matters like river pollution and the end of fishing appear in the background. The narrative is loose and the romantic line weak. Who it's for: viewers interested in Hou Hsiao-hsien's development and in Taiwanese cinema. Who it's not for: anyone expecting the director's mature work, or looking for plot.
