What The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki Is About
Summer 1962. The Finnish boxer Olli Maki is preparing for a world title fight; the country is interested, the press is interested, his manager is very interested. The only problem is that Olli is not: he has fallen in love with Raija and his mind is there. Juho Kuosmanen shot it on sixteen millimetre black and white, so the sixties feel lived in rather than decorated. It politely declines every sports film cliche, caring less about who wins than about where this man is actually happy. It won Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2016, and the real Olli and Raija appear for a moment.
