What The Hidden Blade Is About
In the middle of the nineteenth century, in the years when the feudal order is coming apart, a low-ranking samurai named Munezo is given an order by his clan: kill an old friend and fellow student, arrested for taking part in a rebellion. At the same time he cannot say what he feels for Kie, a servant who has left the household, because of the difference in class. Yoji Yamada adapted stories by Shuhei Fujisawa and made it as the second part of his samurai cycle. There is almost no fighting, and when there is it is short and ugly. The subject is not the sword but a class losing its function and the men noticing. The decision Munezo takes at the end rejects the whole tradition. Who it is for: viewers who like quiet samurai films and period drama. Who it is not for: anyone expecting action.
