Tokyo Taxi

One day the taxi driver Koji Usami is given the job of taking eighty five year old Sumire Takano from Shibamata in Tokyo to a care home in Kanagawa. On the way she asks him to stop at a few places; they pass through the streets where she lived when she was young and the places where she worked, and Sumire slowly begins to tell her own past. As she talks, the journey stops being a removal and becomes a reckoning, and the driver too begins to look differently at his own life. Yoji Yamada’s hundred and three minute Japanese film is a remake of the 2022 French Belgian production Une belle course and is the director’s ninety first film. Chieko Baisho plays Sumire and Takuya Kimura plays Koji; it was shown at the Tokyo film festival on 29 October 2025.
