What Where Spring Comes Late Is About
Seiichi, who works in a coal mine on a small island belonging to Nagasaki, is left without work when the pit closes and decides to gather his family and move to Hokkaido in the north of Japan, where he will farm dairy cattle. The journey is by train from one end of the country to the other, three thousand kilometres; on the way they pass through Osaka, which is holding the world’s fair at that moment, and then Tokyo. Across this journey the family both watches the country’s development from outside and carries its own losses. Yoji Yamada’s hundred and six minute Japanese film was shot entirely on location in a style close to documentary; Chieko Baisho and Chishu Ryu appear. It was completed in 1970 and won in several categories at the Kinema Junpo awards.
