What The House of Smiles Is About
Adelina, in her seventies and living in a care home, and a man staying in the same place take to each other. But neither the institution nor the other residents who share those corridors will allow the relationship; gossip, obstruction and small humiliations follow one another, and it goes as far as the theft of her dentures. Marco Ferreri does not treat old age in the language of pity; he says that desire has no age limit and finds the real coarseness not in the people but in the institution itself. Ingrid Thulin and Dado Ruspoli appear in the Italian production, completed in 1991, which won the Golden Bear in Berlin.
