What The Human Pyramid Is About
In Abidjan, Jean Rouch puts a simple question to the black African and white French students of a mixed lycée: why do you not see one another once the school day is over, and what would happen if you did? The young people turn the question into a game and improvise their own characters and situations; the camera records both real conversations and invented scenes, and the line between the two is deliberately left unclear. The ninety minute film was shot in 1959, the year before Ivory Coast declared independence, and was released on 19 April 1961. Pierre Braunberger produced it, and it was banned by the colonial authorities across most of francophone Africa.
